Beech Hill Hotel is well known as a luxury destination to stay in the heart of Cumbria. For a start it is perfectly placed right beside the great lake of Windermere, with not just views to the lake but also beyond and over to some of the well known mountains of Cumbria.
I was invited to spend a night here on a recent return to Cumbria and after a day wandering up mountains I was ready to not only enjoying the views but enjoying some comforts, food and luxuries within too
Our room was extremely spacious, and clean, with plenty of room and a window onto a balcony that held that wondrous view over Lake Windermere and beyond. There are 57 rooms in Beech Hill Hotel and every single one of them faces the lake. Lots of them have balconies and if on the bottom you get access straight into the garden that in turn leads down to Windermere’s shore.
Even though all rooms are lake facing it has a system of differing levels of wants, needs and budgets, this does help accommodate all tastes. When booking then make sure you look at all the levels of rooms so you get what you desire.
Not only does the hotel have a perfect position half way along Windermere, it naturally sits where the sun goes down behind the mountains over the other side of the water. Perfect for sitting on the balcony or when enjoying a drink on the bar terrace. After a long days walking you have seen many superb views on the fells but this just helps to round it all off, and all relaxed too.
After that moment of relaxation on the terrace it was perfect timing for the waiter to come and ask us to peruse the evening meal menu. Choices, choices, choices to be made. And yes, the hotel restaurant is perfectly positioned for views of the lake. Time to wind down the day with a 3 course meal, a great end to a great day.
Burlington’s is the name of the restaurant and is named after the local slate. Not just for the hotel guests, people come from staying in places all around for a meal here by the lake. Burlington’s has held AA Rosette standard for well over 20 years so that tells you something of the dedication and standard doesn’t it?
All the food is locally resourced from fresh and you can tell in the taste and presentation. Looking at the menu for a start it was difficult to choose because I wanted to try all it sounded good. Check out the current menu here.
Venison was my order in the end and it was damn lovely. Everything was cooked perfectly and plenty of portion to go around that is for sure. The three course meal did take a while between courses so expect that, it is a meal for plenty of chat time or view looking in between. The waiting staff were always smiling and making sure each table was attended to, if the wine was getting low there was soon a top up if you wanted one.
To round a lovely meal off was a magical dessert. I am not normally a dessert person but when I saw ‘Sweet Shots’, a dream dessert for me. Three mini desserts in one! A mini creme brulee, a mini lemon and raspberry posset and a Tobago dark chocolate mousse. Crikey is was nice 🙂
Hunger gone, and feeling completely relaxed it was time to head back to the balcony with a fresh glass of wine from the bar. The moonlight reflected on the lake and the feeling of being completely wound down. Today I had been wandering Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England, and now, sat with a drink in luxury looking back out towards it over the largest lake in England. Bliss.
In the morning the new day broke. We had slept so well, the beds here are absolutely huge by the way so there is no excuse for lack of sleep on that front. For those that love spas they have one of the best known and luxurious in the area here at Beech Hill Hotel. Why not get pampered whilst having the views here that they do? Or go for a swim in the luxurious state of the art swimming pool?
